PioneerDivx.net - firmwares for MPEG4 players :: Divx not smoothly played by my dv393-s

Just bought dv-393s, I tried some divx, but the playback was not smooth especially in fast-motion scenes, then I tried it on my old philips dvp642, it played smoothly.
I flashed the player with the modded fw, but the results still the same.

Can someone please help to identify what problem is.

Your problem's name is probably "Packed bitstream".

yah, it's packed bitstream issue. It played fine after I unpacked it.
but I got a lot avi already burned into DVD.

I called pioneer service center this morning, they said they unable to help as there was no XVID supported according to the manual, and there was no firmware update also.
Very disappointing.
Thankfully we got the Gufiak to fix the subtitles problem. Now, is it possible to solve this packed bitstream problem with the upcoming modded firmware??

Packed bitstream is not so simply to fix. It is a bug in decoding subroutine which is very complicated. But we know MTK-based players which have no problem with PB and maybe some day...

i compared two files: Mission impossible 3 with PB, and one without PB thru Dv-393s, I cant really tell the differences from the aspect of video quality.
Will the video quality badly affected after PB is removed??

It will be not affected at all. PB is just compression method for empty frames and removing it doesn't change video quality.

If someone can fix the PB problem there will be a lot of happy pioneer owners...

If Pioneer make similar fw for all players this would be already solved. But it is not enough just to replace part of fw from one player to another. If you do that, other things may be disfunctioned (laser etc.). It needs lots of work in reading code first. That is why this problem is not fixed yet.

my brother's Philips 5140K hasn't encountered any problems with PB (but it's poor idx/sub support made me choosing pioneer instead), maybe those firmware experts can look into its firmware as it also using MTK 1389 chipset.

The main problem IMO with PB is that decidents in Pioneer don't treat this as a problem, heck maybe they don't even know that the problem exists :lol:

Only poor guys from service centers are "bothered" by some irritating users with strange and unimportant PB or something thingy ... ;-)

To solve a probelem with PB in Philips is much easier. All RISC part is the same for many Philips players, so to make PB support for dvp3040 it is the metter of few minutes. Just to replace RISC part from firmware of dvp 5040 or so, inot the fw for 3040. The only Pioneer that probably fully supports PB is dv-696m but If we replace it's RISC part as a raw, into the fw f.e. dv-393, the player would not work.

My brother's philips 5140k has idx/sub timing problem, that causes the subtitles will disappear after 5-10 mins of playing.
Can this possible be solved with the way pioneer dv-393s modded firmware did??
