while watching some Xvid encoded movies/videos the picture freezes at random points and the USB stick stops blinking (reading) and the player locks up solid, forcing me to unplug the power to re-boot it. I made sure it was not a 'bad' spot in the Xvid file because i fast-forwarded to the spot it froze before (18:56 exactly) and it played through it without issue... once rebooted i can usually watch the entire movie fine, but it may still freeze randomly. I also tried burning the file to CD and still had same issue...As far as i can tell the file is not VBR and the bitrate is well below the players limits (800 kbps-1000kbps) This player is a june 2008 model. I tried the modded firmware, and the same issue still exists...Any ideas?

What firmware version does your player have?

not sure what the original firmware was, but i upgraded to V 2.1 from pioneerfaq.net wich killed my HDMI output as soon as a video started, went back to YGB8827A and still have the same issue. This seems to be an issue with the way certain files are encoded because i have several movies that will play perfectly with no skipping or freezing, but quite frequently i end up with these Xvid files that lock up my receiver after about 20 minutes (not specifically 20 minutes, but close to that) Its worth noting that when the receiver locks up, i have to unplug,reboot, and search through the file to go back to the point i was at ...and quite often it locks up the receiver AGAIN when searching through the file (and searching goes painfully slow, maybe 10 seconds at a time!) Like i said its not a bad spot or a certain bad file, as it will play right through the spot it previously froze in...

Isn't your player placed near to strong source of heat (radiator, amplituner etc.)?

I have 2 dv400's and only 1 of them has this problem of freezing. I think it may be a memory issue with the dvd player. I have a few avi files that always cause one of my dvd players to freeze but the other dvd player does not. I have found a workaround for this problem if you upgrade to STM dv-410 firmware (read my other post on how to update). The reason this firmware may fix your problem is because it allows you to time search your avi files. When i start a movie that normally freezes i use the time search to skip to about 10 seconds into the movie and i no longer have the problem with freezing. I guess when using time search, the dvd player must flush the memory. This seems to fix my problem with freezing. Please be careful when upgrading your firmware because you could also destroy your dvd player. Good luck!

im still having a bit of an issue. The original firmware on my dv-400 occasionally freezes up when playing certain XVID files from the USB port or from a burned disc (dvd or CD), now any other firmware seems to correct this problem (i have used modified dv400 firmware, original 410 firmware, modified 410 firmware) BUT, i have hdmi issues with anything other than original firmware. usually, when i first load the upgraded firmware im fine for as long as the DVD player is powered ON, i can play whatever whenever. Usually the next time i power up the dvd player it works fine until i try to play another xvid video file or dvd. As soon as the video starts the screen becomes all blocky and glitchy and then the TV goes out and says 'no signal'..only way to get it back is to re-load firmware. Its interesting to note that when the HDMI goes out The analog outputs still work (s-video, composite) but they are in black and white and there is no sound :-|

any ideas on getting my hdmi stable?

If you use the modified firmware, set it to output NTSC for TV-System!
If you used a firmware for the DV-410 on your DV-400, you will not be able to get the analougue 2ch output.

It is set to ntsc, if it was set to PAL it wouldnt work at all. In my case, it works until I try and load a .avi Xvid/divx file the second time around (always works first time after I load the firmware, upon re-boot the GUI works fine but HDMI goes out after the video file is loaded)

Have you tried with another HDMI cable?

Maybe you should reload the players firmware via cable:

I do NOT loose analog audio if I connect the video while using analog audio. I tried component video, composite video and s-video and they all allow me to have analog audio with dv-410 firmware. But if the video is not connected then I loose the analog audio. If you are still loosing your analog audio, it could be caused by different eeprom settings. And in that case I don't think there is a fix for that.

@nick3501

Sorry to hear you are still having problems but i think i may have another option you could try, to fix the lockup issue. Try adding another file to your usb drive and start that file first. Once the video has loaded you can now use the next track button or previous track button (depending on where your new video is located on the drive). Make sure you do not go back to the menu, you must enter the next video from the previous video. Once the new video loads, see if you still get lockups. This seemed to work pretty good for me when i tested with the old firmware. good luck!
